How to Reformat Your Hard Drive with Windows XP
- Backup all important data
- Disconnect network and Internet connections
- Jot down network and computer configurations
- Make a bootable disk
- Insert the Windows XP CD
- After inserting the Windows XP CD reboot the computer. You can choose to do this from the CD or on the Start Menu.
- The computer should boot from the CD. If this does not happen and you are at a login screen consult your manufacturer.
- Choose to boot from the CD if this does not happen automatically.
- The Windows setup screen should appear
- In the next menu choose to setup or repair Windows.
- Read the License Agreement
- If the system detects an existing installation of Windows, choose to skip the repair
- The process will then ask you where you would like to install Windows. Choose the currently selected partition unless you need to install it on a different partition.
- Format the drive with the NTFS file system
- Create an administrator login
- The computer should eject the CD and restart when the reinstallation is finished. If not manually eject the CD
- Reconnect the network or any other connections that were disconnected.
