How to Recover Erased Files with Data Recovery Software
A hard drive stores computer files on a series of magnetic disks called platters. Each platter contains many different sectors which contain clusters of data. When you delete a file from the hard drive in Windows, the file is sent to the Recycle Bin. It is possible to recover computer files from the Recycle Bin simply by opening it and viewing the contents.
When a file is emptied out of the Recycle Bin, the Windows record of that file is removed. However, it is still possible to recover the computer file because it has not been overwritten. Erasing a file in Windows is the equivalent of ripping the table of contents out of a book. The information is still there, it's just harder to find. Advanced data recovery software such as Recover My Files will search through every sector of your hard drive in order to recover computer files. If you need to recover erased files avoid installing new programs, transfering data, or saving files to your hard drive so that your erased files are not overwritten.
Recover My Files recovers computer files that have been erased as well as files lost due to a virus infection or system crash. The Format Recover option even makes it possible to recover computer files after a hard drive format. Recover My Files will identify, sort, and recover computer files on your hard drive. Preview and recover computer files with specific support for over 50 file types. Files will be rated on a scale of Very Good to Poor indicating whether some parts of the file may have been overwritten or corrupted.
Step 1 - Recover a Computer File
Sometimes computer files have not been deleted but have been misplaced on your computer. To recover a computer file that has not been deleted, select the Search button located on the Start Menu.If you know the missing file name or part of the missing file name, you can search for a list of all files with that word in the title in order to find and recover the computer file you're looking for.
If you know what type of file you need to recover, you can search specifically for that file extension using the * command. For example, the search *.doc will bring up a list of all Microsoft Word documents while the search *.mp3 will bring up a list of all MP3 files. You can then sort through the list and recover computer files. Click here for a list of more file extensions.
If you know specific words contained in the file, the Containing Text option will search through the contents of a file for a specific keyword. For example, a missing report about sharks could be found by searching for "shark". All files containing the word "shark" will be displayed in order to recover the computer file.
